Olympic Torch Passes Through Pauls Valley, Wynnewood

1999 — 10 Years Ago



News: On Monday the Amtrak passenger service will return to the state and the Heartland Flyer will make a stop at the Pauls Valley depot during a special inaugural run. On board will be U.S. Senator Don Nickles, Okla. Gov. Frank Keating and Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin. A round trip ticket aboard the train from Pauls Valley to Fort Worth will cost approximately $60.

Entertainment: Royal Theatre – Now showing. “The King and I.”

Sports: Courtney Dyan Roberson and Francelia Wright are vying for the coveted title of 1999 Heritage Days Rodeo Queen. Courtney, a PVHS junior, is the 16 year-old daughter of Tracy Roberson. WWHS junior, Francelia, is the 17 year-old daughter of Tammy Biffle.



1984 — 25 Years Ago



News: Carrying the four and one-half pound Olympic torch down sultry Oklahoma highways is hot work, according to three members of the 1984 Olympic Relay Team. The three cooled off in the PV Municipal Pool this afternoon while fellow relay team members carried the torch through Pauls Valley and Wynnewood.

Entertainment: Royal Twin Theatre – “Star Trek III, The Search For Spock” starring William Shatner.

Sports: Pauls Valley, the home of the Professional Rodeo Association, welcomes all professional cowboys and cowgirls to the annual Washita Valley Rodeo Days celebration set for June 21-23. Events will feature bareback bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, team roping, bull riding and cowgirls barrel racing.



1959 — 50 Years Ago



News: The 21st Annual Garvin County Harvest Picnic will be held July 9 at the Wacker Park football field, according to Assistant Home Demonstration Agent, Kathleen Ellis. A crowd of around 2,000 is expected, based on past attendance. A menu of fried chicken, potato salad, fresh tomatoes, pickles, deviled eggs, black-eyed peas, okra, tea, and cake or pie is planned.

Entertainment: Royal Theatre – “The Shaggy Dog” starring Fred MacMurray and Jean Hagen.

Sports: Methodist downed Pauls Valley Glass, 16-12, Wednesday night in a seven-inning Jaycee Softball League makeup game. Methodist scorers were Janco with four runs, Pickard and Tolbert with three, Martin and Stufflebean with two each, and Vann and Mayberry with one apiece.
