  • Rivalry and losses make life all that more fun

(Cue the black and white television ad with Mayberry type music) I bet you remember the time when little Johnny failed to hit the game winning home run or cross into the end zone for the last second touchdown and how disappointed he felt.

  • The more we deny our faults the dumber we look

There may be no greater miracles worked in Hollywood than the job done by makeup artists. They are given some of the most challenging projects that involve turning the horrors of reality into a slightly more tolerable fantasy.

  • God did not create the government in his own image

In the beginning there was darkness and in that darkness a lone elephant and donkey did battle mightily. At first it was pretty hard to see because light had not been invented, so only occasionally did the two bump into one another and declare victory.

  • Chickens could manage the BCS more efficiently

I will with no regret admit that I am far from the biggest sports expert in this region dominated by athletic tradition. It is only in the past five years, perhaps decade that I have given more than a passing glance to who did what and how much rear they kicked since the first intense rivalry began.

  • The valuable gains with dirty old men

As I've become increasingly dislocated in recent years, I've found the classic cliche, "you never know what you've lost until it is gone" may not sound as silly as I once thought. All too often us guys are stuck with the statement that we only ever have our mind in the gutter with no escape route. Granted I can’t argue, though I certainly must be more careful as a married man since the threat of even looking at another woman is a risk that could carry the ultimate consequence.

  • The world of tomorrow is getting further away

Once way back in this great society of ours we actually spent a great deal of time pondering what was to come. Many a generation was convinced that in a matter of decades the future would become so futuristic that we could stop calling Walt Disney a liar.

  • Why no theologian would have survived my childhood

Looking back at my childhood experiences with religion it is a wonder I’m not either the founder of a super cult or a hard core atheist. Between the things that happened at home and the world around me if I hadn’t had good experiences with Christianity, I might be tucked away in a cave muttering over the psychological damage.
