Training class comes to PV

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — A new career path for free is the idea behind a nurse’s aide training class branching out for a stop in Pauls Valley.

The first class here has already started but plans are to hold even more later on by Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City, better known simply as OSU-OKC.

The free training now in Pauls Valley is a Certified Nurse Aide program, or C.N.A.

Tony Lippe, quality assurance coordinator for the training, said this week the C.N.A. training has been on the OSU-OKC campus since 2005.

Those training classes began moving around the state two years later with Pauls Valley being the newest location as the first session here recently got underway.

“We were looking for a new site,” Lippe said about the training.

“We were wanting to grow so we looked at Pauls Valley,” he said. “It’s a good location. We’ve had a tremendous response with people coming from Ada, Purcell and even Norman for this training in Pauls Valley.

“In other cities this training is taking off. Once word got out we got a lot of people calling to get in the classes. This is a great thing for Pauls Valley and the surrounding communities.”

This first nurse’s aide training session is being held at the local Washita Valley Living Center.

“It starts them out on a career path for nursing,” Lippe said, adding participants will have a room for classroom and lab instruction to go along with their hands-on clinical work there at the nursing home.

“They will be taking care of the residents,” he said. “Basically it’s whatever that residents can’t do for themselves. That’s what they will do during the training to get certified.”

The classes are 12 days long, 96 clock hours and at the end of the class they take the state certification exams to become a Certified Nurse Aide.

OSU-OKC and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority have partnered together to offer this “free” training.

According to Lippe, students must pass the Oklahoma state background check, have a negative T.B. skin test and pass a reading test at a ninth grade reading level or higher.

Then they sign a contract with the OHCA and their training is paid for. The students’ only obligation is to work full- or part-time for 12 months in the next two years for any Oklahoma nursing home that is SoonerCare funded.

Right now the plan is to organize another nurse’s aide training session in PV.
