Spirit of giving theme of event

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The giving spirit is again the theme for an annual event this weekend meant to help out one of Pauls Valley's food banks.

It's best known as Samaritan Sunday set for the last day of the month, Sept. 30. For those checking the calendar that’s this Sunday.

Meant to help out the Pauls Valley Samaritan food bank, local residents are again asked to take donations of money and food items with them to regular worship services at their church on Sunday.

Those donations will again go toward helping the food bank restock a pantry that provides assistance in the form of emergency food to local residents in need throughout the year with an emphasis placed on the upcoming holiday season.

The Samaritan Sunday event represents a big step toward the food bank being able to offer the help for those in need, said Lou Hall, a longtime volunteer for various programs like the Samaritans that provide that help.

“The need is there,” Hall said.

“We need to restock our pantry to get us ready for the holidays with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up,” she said.

“Take contributions to your church this Sunday or the chamber of commerce during regular business hours.”

The big needs for donated food items include dry or cooked cereal; macaroni and cheese, canned meats, tuna, stew or chili; peanut butter and crackers; canned fruits, vegetables and soups; Stove-top dressing; and cornmeal mix.

Residents are reminded that no home canned foods should be donated.

Along with this Sunday's event, donations of food or money can also be dropped off at the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce, 112 East Paul, during its normal weekday hours.

Another big part of the ongoing Samaritan effort are food baskets, especially during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

More information will come later on applying for those baskets.
