Anyone for a few state questions?

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The race for president of the United States is not the only area of importance when voters go to cast their ballots during the upcoming general election.

Here in Garvin County there's also a number of legislative races, along with a total of six state questions by all voters in Oklahoma.

To help voters figure out what's what with those questions a meeting open to the public is planned in Pauls Valley next week.

Organized by the county's Democrat Party, the gathering is meant to give all voters an unbiased presentation on each of the half dozen questions.

Marilyn Goodban, chair of the Democrats here, says that's exactly the idea as the meeting is only being set up for informational purposes to help voters.

“We helped lead a bipartisan forum last month to meet the candidates, but we didn't have anything on the state questions,” Goodban said. “This is an extension of that.

“We don't want to tell people how to vote. We really want to give them information so they can better understand the questions and vote with their own values.”

The meeting itself is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 at the Pauls Valley Public Library, 210 North Willow.

Set to present the information on the questions is Dr. Tim Mauldin, an Oklahoma educator and life member of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Mauldin received his master's degree in public administration and doctorate in political science from the University of Oklahoma.

Goodban knows these state questions, like those on past ballots, can be very tricky to understand for many voters. This event is designed to help with that.

“They're very wordy and people don't always understand what they are; the consequences if they pass and the consequences if they don't pass,” she said.

“We'll have handouts with wording from the ballot and general information about each questions.

“He will present a little bit of history about the state questions and the pros and cons for each.”

The event open to any interested voters is also being promoted by the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce.
