The title may not be pool guy but that's exactly what was found with the hiring of a new aquatic supervisor to oversee a couple of swimming facilities in Pauls Valley.
Coming with plenty of experience in the water world is William Tomlinson, who goes by the first name of Billy.
This will be Tomlinson's first week on the job as the supervisor of both the indoor Bosa pool and the future aquatic center now under construction next to the Reynolds Recreation Center in PV's Wacker Park.
Pauls Valley's parks and recreation director, Jennifer Samford, a former supervisor herself of the indoor pool, said Tomlinson comes with years of experience overseeing pool facilities.
“He comes to us with an extremely strong aquatics background,” Samford said.
“He will supervise the staff at both facilities,” she said. “He will be officed at Bosa pool, but he will take over the responsibilities with everything at the Bosa and start planning the lifeguard training classes so we can get staffed up for the summer at the outdoor pool.”
Tomlinson replaces Chris Griffith, who spent the last few years overseeing the Bosa pool before leaving this past August to work at an indoor water park in Clinton.
The new pool guy here was a lifeguard supervisor at a facility in Allen, Texas before taking the PV job.
He has nine years “progressive experience with lifeguards,” according to Samford.
“He has a strong background in lifeguard training, and he's worked at an outdoor and indoor pool,” she said. “He's also worked at a municipal aquatic center.”
That experience will be very much needed as the process begins of figuring out how much staff is needed for the new outdoor water park expected to open by the next swim season.
What that means is the new facility here will need to have plenty of certified lifeguards in place and ready to go when the highly anticipated aquatic center does open for business.
Once the facility is open it will include a large swimming pool, a lazy river ride, open and closed water slides, a bowl slide, a kiddy pool area and a lap and dive pool.
Local taxpayer funds will pay for most of the new pool center — specifically $3.2 million paid out over a 20-year period.
Efforts are still ongoing to raise the private funding needed to complete the project as designed. That amount is around $400,000 making the total price tag for the project $3.6 million.
