The Pauls Valley Foundation for Academic Excellence awarded their annual “Grants to Teachers” on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
There were a total of 25 grants awarded in the amount of $12,192.95. Pauls Valley Junior High was awarded the most grants, receiving seven grants totaling $2,731.62.
Pauls Valley High School received six grants totaling $4,488.68, the highest amount of any school.
Whitebead also received six grants in the amount of $2,639.68. Jackson Elementary received three and Jefferson Early Learning Center received two.
The top four grants are named after individuals or organizations that contributed $5,000 to the foundation in its first five years. Those grants and their winners are:
The Dan Barney Family Grant was the “Wearable Word Builders” awarded to Angie Campbell of Jackson Elementary. This grant provides student vest with clear plastic pockets for letter cards to slide into. Students can then become “part” of a word.
The Joe Colley Family Grant was “Eat, Drink, and Be Active” awarded to Whitebead librarian Shelli Sharber. This project is designed to inform students of the consequences of unhealthy food choices and a sedentary lifestyle.
The Pauls Valley National Bank Grant was “Powerpointing to the Future” by Tonya Tobey at Pauls Valley High School. English students will be required to develop at least two Powerpoint presentations before leaving Pauls Valley High School.
The Rotary Grant was the “Missoula Childrens Theater” awarded to Pam McGee. The production this year will be The Little Mermaid.
The rest of the grants were as follows:
“Construction” by Kenneth Brantley at Pauls Valley High School. Students will us compasses to construct a variety of items dealing with angles and segments to learn about congruent triangle.
“The Heart of the Matter” by Alaina Chronister at Pauls Valley High School. Students will interact in an in-depth study of the cardiovascular system using computer software to graph and monitor heart rate, EKG readings and blood pressure through sensors that feed data to the hand-held computer devices.
“Computing Chemistry” by Mark Green at Pauls Valley High School. This grant uses Vernier lab quests with gas pressure sensors and a pH sensor to help students discover and use chemistry concepts on their own.
“Our Past Into the Future” by Chad Chronister at Pauls Valley High School. This project allows student to document stories of people who have served in World War II in order to preserve these stories before they are lost forever.
“Reading is REAL” by Angela Gray and Kathy McCracken at Pauls Valley High School. This grant will purchase a classroom library of audio books for struggling readers.
“Art & Literary Anthology” by Erin Blankenship at Pauls Valley Junior High. Students will submit poems and pictures to be compiled in a school anthology of art and poetry.
“Silica Shale Jewelry” by Gayla Jackson at Pauls Valley Junior High. While attending Camp Goddard, students will collect shale to use to create beads for jewelry.
“Letters to Soldiers” by Deedra Brantley at Pauls Valley Junior High. Students will correspond with soldiers oversees learning grammar, penmanship and geography skills.
“Got Scanners?” by Holley McKay at Pauls Valley Junior High. Two scanners will be purchased to allow students to scan, edit and upload documents and images to maintain the school website.
“Oklahoma History Center” by Marty Hill at Pauls Valley Junior High. Students will attend the Oklahoma History Center, an 18-acre learning center exploring Oklahoma’s unique history of geology, transportation, commerce, culture, aviation, heritage and more.
“100% Club” by Melinda Alfred at Pauls Valley Junior High. This grant rewards students who reach their Accelerated Reader goal.
“Financial Peace for the Next Generation” by Sharon Bratcher and Angela Green at Pauls Valley Junior High. This is a financial program that teaches students basics on how to handle their money.
“Magic School Bus Adventures” by Angie Campbell at Jackson Elementary. This program uses live action/animated shows to explore the human body, butterflies, recycling, and weather.
“Life Cycle Unit” by Maureen Buzbee at Jackson Elementary. Students will be involved in planting seeds, hatching butterflies and hatching baby chicks.
“Centennial Critters” by Rex Anne Freeman and Linda Williams at Jefferson Early Learning Center. This program teaches about the animals and habitats of Oklahoma. Students will be directly involved with the prairie dog, screech owl, black-footed ferret, bullfrog, salamander, garter snake, box turtle and red-eared slider turtle.
“We Love Literacy Centers” by Penny Whitehouse at Jefferson Early Learning Center. This grant will purchase four literacy centers for letter sounds, word building, work families and sentence building.
“The Grapes of Wrath” by Debra Ely, Shelby Blackwood, Tammy Odom and Angela Doss at Whitebead Elementary. Students will attend The Shakespeare in the Park production of “The Grapes of Wrath.”
“Circle of Life” by Trisha Parker at Whitebead Elementary. This is a 60-minute expedition that takes students on a journey into the animal kingdom.
“Mom, Dad! Guess What We Read?” by Rhea Ann Williamson at Whitebead Elementary. Students will receive a small item weekly that centers around a book that was read at school. They will take these items home and use the items to retell or read the story with their parents.
“Every Picture Tells a Story” by Rhea Ann Williamson at Whitebead Elementary. Class books will be created starring the students themselves using photography.
“A Native American Odyssey” by Becky Messec at Whitebead. This project will use literature to teach authentic Native American culture.

Man behind the blinking lights
Every December, for the last three years, the residence at 401 N. Pine in Pauls Valley has been a main attraction for motorists from all over the area. - It’s a dash to the shelve New fiction at the library includes “Dashing Through the Snow” by Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark, “One Perfect Day” by Lauraine Snelling (LP) and “Cross Country” by James Patterson.
