Editor,
An open letter to the people of Pauls Valley:
Years ago I was playing basketball for Lindsay and we were in the playoffs against Pauls Valley. The intense rivalry between our schools was always there in sports competition. As the game turned out, Pauls Valley beat us in the finals that year. As the game ended, I gestured to the crowd in an unfriendly gesture, which at the time was done only out of the moment of intensiveness of the game. It was not intended to hurt anyone or directed toward anyone.
It just happened just that quick and that was it.
Since that time I have thought about it and since then I’ve been saved by God’s grace. I know I could have hurt people in a way that I never realized. It has bothered me since as I have come to know and feel how wrong I was in doing that.
I want to apologize deeply about that happening. And I hope that as I think so much of the people of Pauls Valley and this town I hope that this did not hurt the spirit of the rivalry between our two schools. Most of all I apologize for the hurt I may have caused to people there.
I hope that young people reading this who are involved in sports will know that sports competition is wonderful and that what I did was just me doing it spur of the moment, but I was very wrong. Sports are great for everyone involved.
Your sports program is very good and I know it will stay that way. I hope this spirit of the game stays as great as it always has been.
