Pauls Valley — A Paoli area man who became big news late last week after he used some type of knife to cut the throat of his wife now faces a formal criminal charge.
Garvin County prosecutors have handed Guy Dunn, 57, a felony count of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, which accuses Dunn of injuring Lois Dunn during a confrontation a week ago at their daughter’s home in Paoli.
Dunn, who used the same weapon to cause self-inflicted injuries, has since been released from an Oklahoma City hospital and currently remains behind bars on a $250,000 bond.
The incident now keeping Dunn incarcerated in the county jail in Pauls Valley came on the morning of Feb. 25.
County deputies here were told by family members of Dunn that he had left the Paoli residence after using what authorities described as a box knife to cut Lois Dunn’s throat.
The laceration to her throat was later estimated at 6 to 7 inches long on one side of her neck and about 1 inch deep.
Efforts to locate Guy Dunn revved up after his wife got the medical attention she needed at the scene. She was airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where she was released earlier this week.
“She has been released and is currently at an undisclosed location for her own safety,” said Garvin County Lt. Travis Crawford.
It was Crawford and fellow deputy Josh Keith who were first at the scene last week and the first to give Lois Dunn medical treatment for the severe bleeding from her laceration.
Crawford also credits Dunn for helping with the action needed to save her life that day.
“She remained calm, that was the best thing she did,” Crawford said.
“She could have panicked but she didn’t. She applied pressure to herself and tried to relax and breath. That slowed down the things that could have gone against her,” he said.
“She played a key factor in all of that.”
As for Guy Dunn, he was found later that same day in a neighboring McClain County field having apparently used the same weapon to inflict injuries to his own neck and wrists.
Also airlifted to OU Medical Center, Dunn remained there until being released on Tuesday. Before he could leave Dunn was detained by hospital officers and later picked up by Garvin County deputies and taken to the county jail here.
Dunn was initially held with bond denied. Later turned down were requests by prosecutors for the bond to again be denied and from the defense the possibility of a $10,000 bond.
Special District Judge Trisha Misak instead settled on a $250,000 total with orders for Dunn to stay away from Lois Dunn if bond is ever posted.
The next hearing in the case is set for March 19.
