Different twists and turns have come for Garvin County officials in a case that started with a possible stabbing or shooting and days later resulted in two burglary related arrests.
Taken into custody on Wednesday were Edward Heath McCoy, 32, and Jackie Williams after county deputies searched their Maysville area home and found several thousand dollars worth of stolen property.
Days earlier McCoy was arrested for possessing a handgun, which is not allowed because of a felony conviction from a burglary case dating back to 2002.
Authorities are today still investigating a case that started a week ago on Thursday, Oct. 25 when deputies were called to a residence about 2 miles south of Maysville.
The initial call in the early morning hours was on the claim a vehicle had been shot as a motorist drove in that same area around state Highway 74.
Officers in Maysville later found evidence the vehicle had been damaged by gunshot. They later reported believing the intended target of the shots was the driver of the vehicle.
While checking out the report deputies found a nearby residence which appeared to be the scene of an unreported shooting.
Living in the residence is McCoy, who was arrested on the firearm charge.
As the investigation continued throughout that same day deputies learned a person had been injured but left the scene before officers arrived.
The victim turned out to be Matthew Maness, 25, of Pauls Valley, who surrendered himself at the sheriff’s office on an outstanding arrest warrant.
Maness had suffered a gunshot wound to the hand as he received medical treatment for the injury before getting bonded out of jail on the warrant.
Sheriff Larry Rhodes said on Wednesday the investigation points to the possibility Maness was the victim of two different assaults with at least one at the McCoy residence near Maysville.
The first on Oct. 21 possibly resulted in Maness suffering stab wounds. Days later he suffered a gunshot wound to his right hand.
A search of the residence on Wednesday resulted in officers locating a lot of stolen property.
“There was about $10,000 worth of stolen property found at the residence,” Rhodes said.
“The property, a lot of high dollar tools, was taken in a burglary in Maysville earlier this year.”
