One turn leads to accident

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — One Wynnewood teenager’s attempt to avoid a collision resulted in a one-vehicle accident in a neighboring county to close out the 2012 year.

State authorities report 18-year-old Mercedes Ann Rimmer was the driver of a vehicle that went off a roadway late last week to avoid striking a second vehicle.

The personal injury accident occurred at a listed time of 4:55 p.m. Dec. 28, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Rimmer was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry northbound on Sunshine Road when it met another vehicle on a hill crest at a site about 5 miles east and just over a mile south of Wynnewood in Murray County.

Riding along as a passenger was Willie Blankenship, 17, of Cedar Hill, Texas.

Once on the hill crest Rimmer’s car swerved right to avoid the other vehicle, where it was overcorrected before going off the roadway to the left.

Once off the road the vehicle struck a fence and rolled one quarter time coming to rest on the passenger side.

Blankenship was airlifted from the scene and taken to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. She was admitted in good condition with head injuries.

Ironically it was Blankenship who was the only one wearing seat belts when the accident occurred as Rimmer was treated and released from Pauls Valley General Hospital.

The official cause of the accident as listed by troopers is “avoiding other vehicle.”

Leading the investigation was OHP Trooper Tommy Riddle with assistance from Trooper Tracey Laxton. Both are from the detachment covering Garvin and Murray counties.

Others helping at the wreck site were Garvin County deputies, Wynnewood and Lighthorse police and Pauls Valley E.M.S.
