New name OK’d for election post

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Garvin County’s election board will soon have a new leader as Doylene Cunningham has been named the new board secretary.

The announcement came Wednesday as Cunningham was the choice of state Sen. Corey Brooks, R-Washington, and officially approved by the state election board during a meeting one day earlier.

Cunningham is now set to officially step into the office in early January as the replacement for Cathy Brinley, who will serve through the end of the year.

“It was a collaborative effort,” Brooks said Wednesday afternoon.

“We got a consensus this person’s qualified and certainly up to par.”

Brooks said Cunningham’s strong resume and references within the community and the county courthouse made her a fine choice for the role.

The state senator said the advice of legislative colleagues like Sen. Susan Paddack, Rep. Lisa Billy and Rep. Bobby Cleveland helped advise his decision to recommend Cunningham. That recommendation was made official on Tuesday by state election board officials.

“She’s very good under pressure, a good organizer, a good leader and a pleasure to get along with,” Brooks said about Cunningham, who is a former educator now working in the private sector. “She’s non-partisan and fair-minded.

“Cunningham will bring important insight and experience from her varied and successful career to the Garvin County Election Board,” he said.

Cunningham is currently the administrator of Hale’s Krien Funeral Home in Sulphur.

She has previously worked as a special education and art teacher for Elmore City-Pernell Public Schools. She also served as the alternative education director at Sulphur Public Schools.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University and a master’s degree from East Central University.

“I wish to extend my thanks to Cathy Brinley, who should be commended for her service to the citizens of Garvin County,” Brooks added.

“I’m confident the appointment of Doylene Cunningham will enable the election board to continue providing quality service with a non-partisan approach.”
