Pursuit charges get tossed for now
Pauls Valley — Mental health concerns appear to be at the center of criminal charges being dropped one day after they were filed against a Del City man who took a couple of law enforcement officers on a wild pursuit throughout Garvin County. A pair of formal counts against Richard Frankfother, 49, were dismissed Tuesday on the basis he needed to continue the mental health treatment he had been receiving before the incident here this past weekend. Frankfother was accused of eluding an Oklahoma state trooper and Wynnewood police officer during a pursuit Sunday afternoon. Once stopped by a tactical maneuver by the trooper, Frankfother wielded a large hunting knife before he could be subdued and taken into custody. Garvin County prosecutors said Wednesday a decision was made to dismiss the felony assault and eluding counts so Frankfother could continue with his undisclosed type of ongoing treatment in the Oklahoma City area. They were quick to stress the state reserves the right to refile the charges in the future if that’s ever deemed necessary. The pursuit involving Frankfother started south of Pauls Valley when a Wynnewood officer attempted to make a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 77. Frankfother, who was alone while driving a truck, kept going through and past Wynnewood. Two attempts by a trooper got the fleeing driver stopped at a county road several miles south and east of Wynnewood. With his vehicle overturned on its side, Frankfother was reported to use the knife, complete with an 11-inch blade, to threaten officers who were attempting to close in and arrest him. That arrest came after a couple of taser darts were fired into the suspect.
