Though it has taken a lot of collaboration between multiple parties, most of the Living Dead Center Festival has been a creation that will either benefit Main Street Pauls Valley or the PV Arts Council.
However, one event Saturday, Oct. 27 with the potential to go well beyond helping just those in Garvin County is the Zombie Walk for Cystic Fibrosis.
An idea suggested by Davis resident Melissa Jones, it will be both an alternative for those who aren’t quite up to going the distance in the Zombie 5K Run at 9 a.m. and a chance to support a cause she believes in closer to home.
“The zombie thing came up and we thought it would be a good thing to walk because not everyone can run,” said Jones.
Inspiration for the cause kicking off at 10 a.m. downtown came from Jones’ husband Richard’s 17-year-old niece, who has dealt with cystic fibrosis her entire life.
Creating the walk came about since they were unable to participate in something similar where she lived out in California, a decision that won’t necessarily dedicate funds to her directly, but will help raise research money for others also suffering.
To participate there will not be a registration fee, but walkers for what will basically be a one-mile route are instead asked to purchase a $15 T-shirt online where proceeds will be directed to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Oklahoma, said Jones.
She is excited that the company printing the T-shirts has decided to donate all proceeds to the cause instead of just a dollar or two, which goes even further.
“It’s just a way we could support her and let her know we were thinking about her,” said Jones. “We just ask everyone to buy a shirt to support us.”
Jones said the money raised for research in the past has done a lot for the people impacted by this disease, the biggest benefit more than doubling the lifespan from what used to be 14 years to around 45 years.
The disease is very rough on those who have it because it attacks a person’s lungs with heavy mucus, making it difficult to breath and also making it especially hard for children to gain weight by impacting their pancreas.
Jones also said this walk will be that much more special after hearing recently that another mother she knows will be driving her own daughter with cystic fibrosis here to participate in the event from Lawton.
In the end, she hopes to make the walk an annual thing and is going to be busy raising more funds for research when they host a post Halloween cause Saturday, Nov. 3 called the Sugar Shock Walk Off at the main park in Davis.
“We’d also like to start a walk for MS,” said Jones. “It’s great to support research.”

The rest of the days events include the Arts Council Monster Art and Glow Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the downtown Arts and Cultural Center, coffin cruise soap box races at 1 p.m., a Monsters Ball and Zombie Prom at 8 p.m. and an interactive showing of the Rocky Horror Picture show at midnight.
