Pauls Valley — Four formal charges have been filed with more maybe to come against a Pauls Valley man accused of breaking into and in some cases stealing from local churches.
The allegation is not new to Nate Christian, 21, who less than two years ago was hit with an identical charge after he was caught inside a PV church after hours.
This time Christian has received four separate felony counts of second-degree burglary with each charge representing a different church victimized over the past month — three coming just in the last few days.
Documents filed in Garvin County District Court show Christian is in two of the charges accused of using a church phone for pay-per-call phone sex services and stealing a laptop computer.
The most recent burglaries occurred last Tuesday at the First Church of God in the 400 block of North Chickasaw and St. Catherine’s Catholic Church located in the 100 block of North Sycamore.
A day earlier Christian is accused of breaking a window and getting into the First Assembly of God Church in the 300 block of North Chickasaw.
Back in mid-February he is alleged to have broken into Trinity Baptist Church in the 200 block of North Chickasaw.
Pauls Valley detective Derrick Jolley said these charges could be only the first few as others might come later since Christian was arrested this week on a total of eight complaints involving five cases in all.
“He confessed to these crimes and instructed me to where all the stolen items were located,” Jolley said.
Along with the stolen laptops, the suspect’s motive appears to have been a desire to use a computer.
“He was going in and using the Internet,” said the detective.
Ironically it was the computers Christian isn’t accused of taking that led to his capture.
“We were able to track him by viewing the history of the computer,” Jolley said.
Put simply — authorities were able to see what online sites had been accessed on the computer, which led to a “social networking profile” and Christian’s name.
Jolley said he learned there was an arrest warrant already issued for Christian here in Garvin County. As a result, Jolley said he and county deputy Karey Poteet teamed up and used a tip to find the suspect.
“We went to a location between here and Stratford where he was suspected of being at that time. He was there so we arrested him and brought him in for questioning.”
Along with a confession, the suspect also informed police he had hid the stolen laptop computers under his girlfriend’s residence, which is where they were found.
It was back in June 2008 when Christian was actually caught inside PV’s First Presbyterian Church, where officials found evidence he had been using the church’s computer to access the Internet.
Around that same time Christian was also facing multiple charges for taking checks and forging more than $7,000 worth from a Katie area church.
