Murder cases get new court dates

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — A couple of new court dates have been set in separate murder cases involving defendants from nearby Elmore City and Wynnewood.

One case involves 30-year-old Justin Hammer, accused of using a shotgun to kill Brandon Duran on the night of Aug. 7 at Hammer’s rural residence northeast of Elmore City.

He is then alleged to have dismembered Duran’s body before disposing of the remains in a nearby pond.

The next step in Hammer’s case was taken when during a recent proceeding in Garvin County District Court his preliminary hearing was scheduled for Feb. 28, 2013.

The process to reach the hearing date was slightly delayed because prosecutors had not yet received reports from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation lab and the state medical examiner’s office.

Hammer has claimed it was self defense when he used a shotgun to fire the deadly shot into the face of Duran. He has told authorities that Duran was making verbal threats while forcing his way through a door at the Hammer residence.

An investigator testifying at a hearing this past summer said there was evidence showing Hammer might have planned out the killing in advance.

In another case a jury trial has been set for Martin High, 42.

High is accused of accused of attacking and killing 84-year-old Glenn Brownlee in his Wynnewood residence in late September 2011.

On one side High denies having any involvement in Brownlee’s death.

On the other authorities have said a left palm print found on a door inside the Brownlee residence was a positive match with High.

For now High’s jury trial has been set for September 2013. A pre-trial meeting in the case is scheduled for July 29.
