Commissioners close paperwork on grant
Pauls Valley — It’s the end of one grant and the start of another as a Garvin County group is gearing up to request funding for a rural firefighter project.
All three county commissioners and a handful of others were part of a public hearing this week that officially closes out the paperwork for a six-figure grant that has already been used to help pay for the construction of a new courthouse elevator nearing its final stages right now.
Grant writer Claire Murphy said the hearing wraps up a $150,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds approved for the elevator, which is one of several parts of a larger courthouse renovation project.
“This is the final public hearing for this grant,” Murphy said.
The grant has already been mixed with county sales tax funding to pay the total price tag of around $370,000 for the new elevator.
Work remains ongoing to wrap up the elevator being constructed on the outside of the courthouse facility in Pauls Valley with separate connections being made to each floor. The elevator could be open to the public as early as next month. When that occurs work is expected to begin very quickly on removing the current elevator.
With that grant process done Murphy said it’s time to look toward the next one.
This round will focus on a project that if successfully funded would supply a tanker trailer to rural fire departments in each of the three districts in the county.
With a deadline to apply set for the end of this month, Murphy said this new grant would total $45,000, which if eventually approved would be matched by county funds for a grand total of $90,000.
The “county revitalization” funding would be used to help rural firefighters throughout the county.
“They would supply the water to these fire departments,” District 1 Commissioner Kenneth Holden said about the three tanker trailers.
The next step is to get all the proper paperwork finished up and submitted before March 31.
“It will be June or July when we find out if we’re awarded,” Murphy said.
County Clerk Gina Mann was quick to add the county has been very successful in recent years with two grants approved for courthouse renovation and another used for a fair barn project.
“We’ve been pretty good with these grants the last few years,” Mann said.
