Pauls Valley, Oklahoma —
Hopes are some of the high numbers from a recent county show will spill over to an effort to breathe some life back into a horse club here.
The big interest came during the Garvin County Fair Horse Show held Aug. 28 in Pauls Valley. Each city in the county was represented at the event, which included 185 entries.
That level of participation offered a much needed boost to that county show since last year’s numbers were so small that organizers were in fear of losing the event altogether.
Now Dessie Daugherty is hoping the 4-H Horse Club can attract the same kind of interest.
Much like the county show, Daugherty hopes to save the club and make it strong once again.
“We’re trying to revitalize the 4-H Horse Club,” Daugherty said.
“We’re getting it going and breathing some air into it.”
An effort to bring the club back gets started with a “meet and greet” gathering for interested youth ages 9 to 19 this weekend. The start time is 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Pauls Valley Roundup Club Arena.
Those interested in taking part are encouraged to bring their horse, along with a dessert or snack, and as Daugherty puts it, “be ready to play some fun horseback games.”
“The club used to be strong with horse shows and trail rides, things like that,” she said.
“The membership just fell off and kids have so many other things to do. Now we’re trying to save the horse club.”
Anyone looking for more information on Sunday’s event should give Daugherty a call at 405-238-7425.
