Delta Transit hosting public meets

emann@pvdemocrat.com — Though serving its customers is certainly business as usual for Delta Public Transit, the people are also needed for their opinions on how they can make service better.

The general public will get that chance later this month as the Pauls Valley based office at 215 West Paul plans to host two public meetings as a way to gather this information, according to Transit Director Susan Coldwater.

A requirement that must be met in order to apply for the grants the public transportation service subsists on, anyone in the area is welcomed to share their thoughts the next two Mondays — March 18 and March 25 from noon to 1 p.m.

“We are available for them to come and talk to us,” said Coldwater. “It’s open to the public; it just gives us an open door to discuss what they need.”

Other than an six month experiment to see if there was interest in Saturday ridership that did not pan out in the previous year, the service has actually had no trouble finding people to transport around the area, said Coldwater. If anything they’ve had more trips during the week than they ever did before on average and the only worry they have is each time gas starts heading toward $4 a gallon.

Coldwater hopes to have this feedback early since the grants are due by May 1 and is important because it makes up more than half of their annual budget. There are no plans to raise fares for their busses or vans anytime soon and anyone is welcomed to use the service by arranging a ride by telephone first.

“It’s going fast and furious,” said Coldwater. “We will keep going as we can.”

To ride Delta Transit it is $1.50 for seniors or disabled individuals and it is $2.00 for adults, and only costs more if someone needs to be transported outside the city limits.

To arrange a ride call 1-800-THAT-BUS (842-8287). For more info or to inquire how one can donate to the nonprofit, call Delta at 405-756-1100. Ask for Susan.
