Contest invites kids to design recycling logo

emann@pvdemocrat.com — As excitement builds for the opening of Pauls Valley’s recycling center, those involved are already laying the foundation to inspire passion through future generations.

The idea is a contest inviting school age kids from the immediate area to design the center’s official logo and later celebrate the artwork through several Keep Oklahoma Beautiful events, according to PV Recycling Committee Secretary Erin Babcock.

It all will lead up to their opening on Earth Day on Monday, April 22, and she noted how this encourages kids to care since they might have a chance to have something they created be seen by all those who drop by the South Walnut Street location next to Valley Farmer’s Market.

“I think it’s really important for their involvement in the beginning,” said Babcock, noting how the age range is open for those from 3 to 19-years old. “It helps give them some ownership and something to look forward to.”

Artists, be those who go to school in town or at Whitebead and even those who are home-schooled, need to get busy designing now as all entries are due at city hall (100 W. Paul, Pauls Valley, OK 73075 by mail) by Monday, March 11.

Babcock has already seen plenty of interest in what recycling means to this region when she dropped off entry forms at the area schools with most people curious about details like what will be accepted.

“The funny thing is they just want to know more about the recycling center,” said Babcock, adding that several teachers like the idea, but want to know about all the benefits. “I think they sounded excited.”

For those interested, the rules include drawing the logo on a separate piece of 8 1/2 inch square paper and attaching it to the form, using no more than four colors and going with a theme that matches the mission statement of “To help make a difference in sustaining the Earth’s resources.”

Some of the other areas where the logo will be displayed will include the Trash-Off parade on Friday, April 5 and announcements will be made after the contest has been judged at the Wednesday, March 13 recycling meeting.

“Hopefully it will actually help with the education taking hold,” said Babcock, adding how a party to kick off the new drop-off location will be held the Saturday before the grand opening on March 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s pretty much all school age.”

Copies of the entry forms can also be picked up at city hall and the PV Democrat.

For those who wish to donate to the project, Arlen Williams, leading the Pauls Valley Community Foundation efforts, is heading those efforts and can be reached at 405-238-6444.

Monetary donations can be mailed to 509 W. Paul, Pauls Valley, OK, 73075. To see how one can get involved in the Garvin County Community Living Center/City of PV project call the Living Center at 405-238-3773.
