Garvin County’s unique event where recycling meets the glamor of the catwalk is still nearly two months from returning for its second year, but for those with the Pauls Valley Arts Council, it’s never too early to think about how one will participate.
As PV Arts Council President Mike Dyson can attest first-hand, it’s no overnight project to come up with an outfit using 80 percent repurposed materials and is already looking forward to the excitement as the Trash in Fashion show graces the PV Arts and Cultural Center on Friday, April 26.
The popular evening had no trouble attracting fans as well as entries the first time around, even winning a special state main street award last year for how creative it was.
“We got so many comments on how fun it was and how many people like it,” said Dyson, noting how it brings out a lot of recycle minded people since April is a big month for other related activities.
“In fact Keep Oklahoma Beautiful wants to hold a statewide fashion show between towns as a result.”
The event is being streamlined a little more than the first show with only one category, that way it eliminates any confusion one way or another on how to design an outfit, said Dyson. This means there will be fewer awards given out, but the awards up to grand prize once decided upon, should be more impressive.
People have a chance to join in as groups again like last time and can either show off the outfit themselves or find people to model a maximum of three outfits with entry fees at $15 for the first and $5 for each additional, said Dyson.
After outfits are submitted no later than April 24, it will all kick off at 7 p.m. where a DJ will play either tracks brought in by competitors or suggest something to model to.
“We’re giving them more creative freedom with one outfit… Just let them do anything they want and come up with a winner,” said Dyson, who participated himself by designing humorous outfits like a Trojan warrior with a broom handle on his helmet and a hubcap shield. “It’s also encouraging people to find other uses for trash… It’s pretty unique for around here.”
Another angle that is new is the arts council opening up the possibility of participants having their theme sponsored by someone else or a local business to drum up interest, said Dyson.
The event is also being promoted as a way to encourage more people to get involved long term with the council since the number of leaders has reduced on their board in the past year or so. He’d like to find people who aren’t necessarily able to arrange aspects of all their projects, but those who can help in areas where they are interested in one specific idea or another.
The council board is currently looking for someone to fill the role of secretary since they already have a vice president and treasurer and Dyson added they are always looking for people with a wide array of interests, said Dyson. He believes one does not even really have to be an artist in any official capacity and membership is only $25 a year with meetings each Monday at 6 p.m. at the cultural center.
“I’d like to find people who want to help for one particular event,” said Dyson. “We really encourage people to be innovative.”
