Tragic wreck claims toddler

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Tragedy struck when a Stratford toddler was killed in a three-vehicle accident in neighboring Pontotoc County.

Pronounced dead after the Tuesday night accident was 22-month-old Reagan Mitchell.

Mitchell was a passenger in one of three vehicles involved in an accident a few miles west of Ada.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

What is known is Mitchell was riding in a 2011 Jeep driven by her mother, Whitney Griffith, 23, also of Stratford.

An OHP report shows the Jeep and a second vehicle, a 2009 Honda driven by Sara Woods, 28, of Ada, were traveling westbound on state Highway 19.

At a site about 8 miles west of Ada the Honda slowed and came to a stop in an attempt to make a left turn.

Troopers reported the vehicle was stopped while yielding to an oncoming tractor truck that was traveling eastbound on the same highway.

For an unknown reason the Jeep did not stop and struck the Honda from behind at a listed time of 5:04 p.m. March 5 , according to the report released late Tuesday night.

With the collision the Jeep then overturned right into the path of the approaching truck.

The young Mitchell was taken by ambulance to Valley View Hospital in Ada, where she was pronounced death.

Griffith was taken to the same hospital and admitted in stable condition with trunk internal injuries.

Investigating troopers reported Mitchell was in a car seat at the time of the tragic accident, while all others were wearing seat belts.

Woods was treated and released from the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center after being taken by person vehicle.

Also treated and released but from Valley View Hospital was Patrick Sanders, 35, of Tuskahoma, who was the driver of the tractor truck. He was transported by Valley View E.M.S.

OHP Trooper Tyler Jack of the Pontotoc County Detachment was assisted at the wreck site by Pontotoc County deputies and Ada and Pickett firefighters.
