Chamber steps in with voter drive

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Pauls Valley’s chamber of commerce office is stepping in to help residents and election officials with a late voter registration drive as the deadline nears.

That simply means any eligible voters can get registered to vote for this November’s presidential election by dropping by the local chamber office, located at 112 East Paul, before or on the Friday, Oct. 12 deadline.

The registrations are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through the deadline.

“We have a big window banner up to let people know they can register to vote here at the chamber,” said Della Wilson, president of the local chamber.

“If they leave their completed registration forms here we’ll make sure and get them to the Election Board,” she said.

Much like the message of election officials, Wilson said the chamber drive is meant to help some residents get their voter registrations updated; especially needed after last year’s redistricting of election boundaries, in some cases changing precinct voting sites and new addresses for those in rural areas because of a new countywide 911 system.

“Our county still has a high percentage of voters that have not changed or updated their new 911 addresses,” Wilson said. “And since redistricting was completed last year, people may be voting in different polling places.

“We want to help people know their voter registrations are updated and they reflect their new 911 addresses.”

To further help voters the chamber is also sharing Garvin County voter precinct maps and the current list of polling places.

“We’re hoping to reach as many people as we possibly can by the 12th,” Wilson said.

“We want to be a resource information center for the election.”

Also available are sample ballots, which for different parts of Garvin County add up to the big race for president of the United States, one U.S. House race, two state Senate races, four state House races and a long list of judges for the Oklahoma Supreme Court and the courts of criminal and civil appeals.

There will also be mailed absentee ballot applications, which are due by Oct. 31, and hand-outs on the six state questions facing all Oklahoma voters.

The chamber will sponsor a special program later this month on those same questions.

Dr. Tim Mauldin is scheduled to share information on the state questions during a forum open to the public at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30.

The general election is set will be on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
