Jail ahead in animal cruelty case
Some time behind bars awaits a Lindsay man after he accepted a plea agreement for both old and new charges, including recent allegations of unusual cruelty to two dogs.
A five-year prison term with two of those years suspended was handed to Jamie Dwayne Pickett, 29, after he changed his plea to guilty during a recent hearing for animal cruelty charges filed against him just last month.
The sentence also applied to Pickett’s conviction back in 2003 for kidnapping, which came after an altercation with his own wife.
When new criminal counts appeared in February prosecutors from the Garvin County District Attorney’s office pushed to accelerate the 5-year deferred sentence given to Pickett for the previous case.
Ironically Pickett had been scheduled to end that deferred sentence in June.
Pickett’s guilty plea went specifically for the felony allegations he used a .45 caliber pistol to shoot one of his two Pit bull dogs as it was restrained in a yard, while a second one was found with serious stab wounds.
County authorities reported the incident on Feb. 17 came after an intoxicated Pickett had an argument with his wife in the early morning hours at their rural Lindsay area residence.
Pickett later admitted to deputies that he had fired several gunshots but couldn’t remember anything about the canine stabbing.
Pickett claimed he went outside and retrieved a pistol, which he fired five or six times at a black and white dog named Cookie.
The two dogs were found alive by a neighbor about 12 hours after the incident and put down because of their extensive injuries.
Also a part of Pickett’s plea agreement was an order for him to undergo drug rehabilitation and treatment, in addition to an anger management program.
Two misdemeanor counts of recklessly handling a firearm were dismissed in Pickett’s case.
