Red Cross seeks AmeriCorps worker

The Heart of Oklahoma Chapter of the American Red Cross assists the residents of Garvin and surrounding counties and one of the people responsible for providing services to those residents is the AmeriCorps worker.

Garvin County Red Cross Manager, Angielee Wright, said the Heart of Oklahoma Chapter is currently looking for someone to take over the local AmeriCorps duties and the person selected will receive adequate training as well as a compensation package for their time.

“The AmeriCorps member we hire will be trained as a CPR-First Aid instructor and will receive additional training to prepare them to recruit volunteers, respond to disasters and teach safety classes to school children throughout the county,

“They will also receive health care and child care, along with a living stipend of $11,400. The AmeriCorps member will serve for a 12-month period beginning Sept. 12 and, upon completion of 1,700 hours of service, will also receive a $4,725 education award,” Wright said.

“The education award can be used for tuition and books at any institute of public education or may be applied to an existing student loan.”

As Wright explained it, parties interested in filling the AmeriCorps position must call her at 405-323-2579, no later than July 23, and interviews will be held at the end of the month.

Qualified applicants must be 18 and older and hold a valid GED or high school certificate. They can be a college student but must not be taking more than 6 credit hours per semester.

Wright said AmeriCorps duties will be conducted primarily within the boundaries of Garvin County but workers are occasionally called on to help with Red Cross activities in neighboring counties.
