City races now in place

From all appearances a couple of interesting races have developed for Pauls Valley’s city council after a three-day filing period ended Wednesday.

Three candidates have filed to make a run at two council offices slated for a local municipal election this spring.

In both cases the incumbents, Mayor Tim Gamble and council member Gary Alfred, each drew a couple of opponents.

Gamble is now set to go up against challengers Kevin Stark and Jerry Suggs.

For the other office one new candidate filed Wednesday to challenge Alfred for his four-year office.

In addition to Alfred, those filing for the Place 4 post are Chris Coon and Hal Blevins.

Municipal races in several other area cities also took shape after Wednesday’s filings.

A total of six candidates filed to run for three four-year spots on the Maysville Board of Trustees.

Signing up to go for the offices are Marshall Neill, Trinity Jones, Jacque Martin, Dennis L. Purkhiser, Gay Freeman and Donald E. Breitkreutz.

Stephanie Penrod was unopposed for Maysville’s office of town clerk/treasurer, which carries a two-year unexpired term.

A race for four posts on the Lindsay City Council also drew a big crowd as seven candidates are running for the two-year terms.

Those Lindsay candidates are Brant Stubblefield, John Branch, Fannie Stephens, Wanda Clagg, William Belknap, Todd S. Hinckley and Steve Abram.

Lindsay voters will decide that issue on March 3, while other races are to be contested on April 7 with a runoff date, if needed, set for May 12.

Voters in Paoli will also have a choice for a single two-year unexpired term on the board of trustees there.

Filing for the office were Mary Lee Gish and Boyd L. Nichols.

Tracy Beckelheimer and Lesana Carter were the only two candidates to file for two four-year board offices in Paoli.

Mary Jane Davis was the lone candidate for Paoli’s town clerk/treasurer post.

The one race that developed in Stratford was for the four-year Ward 4 office as Dorothy Pruitt and D. Mark Stone signed up to run.

Robert Page was unopposed for Paoli’s Ward 2 post, as was Sheila L. Keith for the position of town treasurer.

The one race set in Elmore City is between David K. Schmidt, Searcy J. Simmons Jr. and Steven Johnson as the trio filed to go for the four-year Ward 1 office on the city council there.

The EC offices with a single candidate include Larry Dale Cleveland for mayor, Randal Shane McFadden for Ward 3 council, Keith C. Jackson for a two-year unexpired Ward 4 term and Lisa Rollings for city clerk/treasurer.

All four offices in Wynnewood saw only one candidate in each.

Four-year spots on the Wynnewood City Council went unopposed for Gail Mayberry (Ward 1), Ramon H. Airington (Ward 2), Judge T. Blackwood (Ward 3) and James “Sonny” Hays (Ward 4).

All those filing for office have until 5 p.m. Friday to withdraw their candidacies, election officials said.
