Elmore City recently got a new postmaster who’s really not all that new to the Garvin County community.
In fact, Pam Goodin isn’t really that new to the surrounding area since she’s worked postal jobs in several cities here, including Pauls Valley.
Goodin feels fortunate to not only have her new postal post in EC but also get the opportunity to be around so many people who help make her work so enjoyable.
“I’ve met tons of nice people and the U.S. postal people are salt of the earth,” Goodin said.
“It’s a fun and challenging job. The best part is meeting so many nice people,” she said.
“I’ve been in Garvin County a lot. I feel lucky enough because I love it here.”
Goodin, who lives in Davis, became Elmore City’s postmaster just a handful of weeks ago.
Still, the job’s not all that new since she’s served as the officer in charge at the post office there since September 2008. During that same time Goodin has served as the Fox postmaster since July 2006
“We have three rural routes and we manage that, plus the post office box section for our in-town customers. We get the mail in every morning and out every morning,” she said about her EC job.
“I work the windows every day, but I multi-task all day long. I have many different areas to deal with.”
Goodin started her postal career as a city carrier in Purcell back in 1995. A year later she transferred to Wynnewood to work as a clerk at the post office there.
She’s had two stints in both Wynnewood and Stratford, in addition to putting in some time at Pauls Valley, Wayne, Konawa and Marietta.
For Goodin her big challenge with the new assignment is managing other people. In Elmore City that means overseeing five other employees.
“The thing now is working to manage other people. That’s a big challenge for me. I’ve worked at a lot of post offices but I haven’t managed others before,” she said.
Yet another challenge has been the work involved with all the recent address changes due to a new countywide 911 emergency phone service set to be operational soon.
“It was a big thing. It was a bigger task for my carriers because they had to learn all the new numbers. It’s been harder on them than me. My thing has just been paperwork,” Goodin said.
Although the transition to the new addresses there is pretty much done, it’s still seen some challenges coming from it, namely from a few postal customers.
“Still we have some people who use their old addresses. They need to start using their new ones.”
