It’s a rumble with museum, movie

It will be a real rumble as a pro basketball mascot is teaming up with a unique Pauls Valley museum and others to celebrate an upcoming movie and the simple — but important — act of reading.

Rumble the Bison, the mascot of the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA basketball team, will be among the many features of Saturday’s celebration at the Toy & Action Figure Museum.

The event centers around the upcoming movie release of “Where the Wild Things Are.”

Since the movie is based on a beloved children’s book, Saturday’s activities at the local museum will place a heavy emphasis on reading.

“We’re celebrating the release of the ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ movie,” museum curator Kevin Stark said. “The Pauls Valley Public Library and toy museum are banding together to showcase this event,”

Stark said museum officials want to use this event as an opportunity to get kids to visit their local libraries.

Partnering with the museum and library is the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.

Rumble, voted last season’s NBA mascot of the year, will join the celebration from 2 to 3 p.m.

“The big thing is Rumble, the mascot for the Oklahoma City Thunder, will be there,” Stark said.

“He’s going to read the book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to the kids. He won’t actually be reading. He has a buddy who will do that while Rumble acts it out.”

Joining in is the NBA team’s Rolling Thunder Book Bus scheduled to drop by the museum from 1 to 3 p.m. Children who visit the bus will go home with a free book.

Plenty of other movie-related activities are also planned, Stark said.

“There will be events all day long like give-aways, posters, free comics, a scavenger hunt, things like that.”
