Teaching junior high age kids social skills and etiquette they might not normally get in the classroom is the plan for a group which wants to establish a chapter in Garvin County.
The National League of Junior Cotillions is searching for someone to serve as the chapter director. The program provides etiquette, character education and social dance training for middle and junior high school students.
Need some examples? How about the sometimes “lost art” of teaching kids basic manners, how to properly converse with others or greet them? There’s also learning more about the proper silverware and glassware used at social gatherings.
How about the grace of ballroom dancing? It’s also included among the skills taught in the program, said Debra Roberts, director of media relations for the Junior Cotillions.
“It teaches children manners, etiquette, ballroom dance. We like to call it the social graces,” Roberts said. “We want to teach them those skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.”
The specific range for the program is kids in the sixth through eighth grades.
The program, with headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., was established in 1979 and has licensed chapters in 37 states with three operating in Oklahoma.
“We wanted to broaden our chapters in Oklahoma and believe Garvin County is an area that would support one,” Roberts said.
Anne Colvin Winters, NLJC’s national director, agrees.
“We believe it will be an important addition to the training of young people in this area,” Winters said.
But, first a Garvin County director is needed before February, when training is planned.
A yearly fee is assessed youths to participate in the program that includes five classes and two ballroom dances a year.
More information about the training and program is available on the group’s Web site, www.nljc.com or by calling 1-800-633-7947 or sending an e-mail to cotillions@nljc.com.
