Although nothing official has been released, all indications are a Garvin County grand jury has finished with the testimony for one closed-door investigation and has moved onto another case.
Sources have confirmed no additional witness subpoenas have been issued for the investigation into last year’s shooting death of a Wynnewood man. It’s believed all that remains from the six-woman, six-man jury is a final report when it comes to a closer look into Tom Horton’s death.
No announcement has been made on the case’s status or the possibility of an open or closed report on the findings.
Horton was found dead in his Wynnewood home in December 2008 from a shotgun blast to his chest, which the state medical examiner’s office ruled was a suicide. Family and friends of Horton questioned the ruling and successfully pushed for a grand jury investigation.
Jurors and two prosecutors serving as advisers met for four days of testimony in September before a nearly two-month recess ended last week and the jury went back into session.
It was confirmed this week no additional witnesses have been scheduled in the Horton case.
However, subpoenas have been issued and witnesses lined up in a drug-related case against Pauls Valley resident Andy Adkins, 48.
Jurors are believed to have accepted the case at the request of prosecutors in the Garvin County District Attorney’s Office.
In what some officials have described as a case of fraudulent “doctor shopping,” Adkins is accused of seeking and obtaining prescriptions, mostly for pain medications, from various physicians and pharmacies in Oklahoma and Texas during a 12-month period.
All indications are closed testimony in the case got under way Tuesday in Pauls Valley.
Adkins faced two separate felony charges in 2008 of forging or fraudulently obtaining prescription medications.
In one of the cases involving a Pauls Valley pharmacy, Adkins has a jury trial scheduled for January.
The other was dismissed in April at the request of prosecutors, pending further investigation.
