The father of a 2-month-old Paoli boy has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the infant’s death.
Johnny Ray Speerbrecher, 28, was charged with three offenses in Garvin County District Court Monday. Besides murder, he faces a felony charge of drug possession near a Paoli school with intent to distribute marijuana, along with a misdemeanor drug paraphernalia charge. The murder charge accuses Speerbrecher of using too much force, which caused the March 9 death of his son at their home in Paoli.
The case against Speerbrecher began when authorities received an emergency phone call about the infant, Brody Speerbrecher, who had reportedly stopped breathing. After first aid procedures were performed at the scene, the baby was taken by ambulance to the emergency room of Pauls Valley General Hospital. The boy was pronounced dead a short time later.
After the infant’s death he was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Oklahoma City, where an autopsy was performed. It was concluded the boy’s death was caused by a traumatic head injury.
On the day of the infant’s death, Garvin County authorities also reported finding an undisclosed amount of marijuana in the family’s Paoli home and evidence the illegal drug was being distributed.
The paraphernalia charge against Speerbrecher involves the discovery of scales, rolling papers, a glass pipe and a grinder, which documents filed by the Garvin County District Attorney’s Office claim are items used in illegal drug activity.
