School candidate list still short

Staff reports

With today’s 5 p.m. deadline to file for school board positions, few races are shaping up for the districts scattered across Garvin County.

So far, only two positions are contested. Filing their intention to run for a three-year school board post in Whitebead are Joyce E. Tate and Brent Thompson.

The number of candidates was also two in Paoli as David Wells and Adam Brooks both filed Tuesday.

The remaining positions included in the filing period are for five-year terms.

In Pauls Valley the lone candidate to file by the end of the day Tuesday was Shelby Humphrey.

The story is the same in four other area school districts. Pat LaMascus, who once served on the school board in Maysville, has filed in Wynnewood, Reneé Barber has filed in Elmore City-Pernell, Linda Kinard is the only candidate in Maysville and Stratford incumbent Jimmie L. Jarrell is seeking another term.

As of Tuesday no candidate has filed for a school board post in Lindsay.

Candidates may withdraw their names from consideration through Friday.

The election is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2010.

Garvin County Election Board officials remind voters to apply as soon as possible if they’re interested in having an absentee ballot mailed to them for any 2010 elections.

Applications for absentee ballots must be made in writing. Absentee ballot application forms are available from all county election boards can be downloaded by going to the Oklahoma State Election Board Web site.

Voters are not required to use the form, however. They may write a letter to their county election board to apply for absentee ballots. The letter must contain the voter’s name, birth date, address at which they are registered to vote, the election or elections for which they are requesting ballots, the address to which the ballots should be mailed and the voter’s signature.

People who don’t have home computer access to download forms may get forms at the Election Board office, most post offices, public libraries or Tag agencies.
