Five school board races in Garvin County ended up being contested races as the candidate filing period ended Wednesday evening.
On the final day of filing, a race was created in Pauls Valley when former school board member Melissa Moxley Nation filed for office, making it a two-person scramble with Shelby Humphrey for the five-year office No. 5 post on the board. Not seeking another term is the current holder of that office, Brent Grimmett, who chose not to file for re-election.
Four other school board spots will also be contested in the Feb. 9, 2010, election. Those districts include Whitebead, Wynnewood, Paoli and Maysville.
Candidates filing for a three-year office in Whitebead include Joyce E. Tate and Brent Thompson.
In Wynnewood the race is between Pat LaMascus and Terrell Turman. Filings didn’t include incumbent Coy Niemyer.
The names are also new in Paoli as candidates are David Wells and Adam Brooks. Choosing not to seek another term was incumbent Heather Hutchinson.
Voters in Maysville’s school district also have a choice — incumbent Linda Kinard and Susan Deviney both filed.
School board races in three other area districts won’t be races because incumbents are not opposed in their bids for re-election to five-year terms. Lone filers included Reneé Barber in Elmore City-Pernell, Jimmie Jarrell in Stratford and Larry Winn in Lindsay.
Election officials have said the deadline for any candidate withdrawals is Friday afternoon.
