Through all the difficulties anyone faces when battling cancer, often the most comfort can be gained when one knows they have someone to rally to their side.
That’s all the reason Wayne residents like Peggy English and Cheryl Dutton needed to help quickly put together the 1st annual Lori Webster Fight for Life Bullfight this Saturday, Oct. 20.
Set up to help cover medical costs for Webster, a Maysville resident who has been battling cancer for several months now, the event promises an evening full of impressive entertainment for someone who has touched hearts well outside of Garvin County at the McClain County Expo Arena starting at 4 p.m.
“The medical bills are piling up,” said Dutton. “So the family is going to need some help.”
The urgency for the event picked up recently when Lori’s friends learned that her battle had been deemed terminal due to the cancer spreading beyond treatment, according to Dutton.
She added how it has been difficult for the family to take care of all of the bills since Lori had to quit her job at the Gas & Go in Maysville and is a situation reflective of many families’ struggles no matter how the disease progresses.
English, who is a friend of Lori’s through family, can certainly relate herself to the devastating impact of what Webster is going through, having overcome breast cancer and losing a son to cancer. In fact, it was how Dutton became friends with English because her own son who overcame it that made it clear how many people are impacted.
“We are trying to raise money for them because when the time comes they will still need a lot of help,” said Dutton. “I don’t even know Lori, but I will go out and help anyone who has cancer for that reason.”
The response has been strong from those in the bullfighting community, including Cody Webster, a cousin of Lori’s husband Jim, who has made quite a name for himself as a championship bullrider, said English. A number of his fellow riders from those in Canada to Florida have offered to come over and participate in the three round plus championship round bullfight.
“Cody has a lot of God given talent and this is a way he wants to give back,” said English. “We have nine of the best bullfighters in the world... It’s going to be the equivalent of the Ada bullfights.”
However, though Lori’s family benefits this time around, English hopes this can be an annual event that also raises awareness for all types of cancer. Part of the flag drill introduction will include a group called the Tough Enough Riders from a 10-year-old-girl on up representing the fact anyone of any age can get a form of the disease.
Every part of the tickets, $12 for adults as well as $6 for kids, and any other money raised from T-shirts to collection jars will go toward this cause, said English. The rest of the evening includes a concert by Luke Kaufman, entertainment by several trick riders as well as silent auction items like an OU autographed football and a shirt donated by Shane Proctor, the 2011 PRCA World Champion Bullrider.
“This is going to be one of the biggest things brought to our area,” said English. “We ride for all cancer awareness.”
