Charge filed in tragic wreck case

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — A tragic accident that claimed the life of an Elmore City woman last summer now has a Texas man facing a negligent homicide charge.

The formal criminal count was filed this week against Shaun Adams, 29, of Copperas Cove, Texas.

Adams was the driver of a tractor-trailer that state troopers determined made an improper turn resulting in a collision with a second vehicle driven by 46-year-old Georgina Ann “Jeannie” McCurley.

McCurley was pronounced dead at the scene on Aug. 15 after the accident on state Highway 29 a few miles west of Wynnewood.

Filed against Adams earlier this week in Garvin County District Court was a misdemeanor county of negligent homicide - motor vehicle and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

A court document filed in the case makes the claim Adams was acting in “reckless disregard” when he is alleged to have made an unsafe left turn causing the collision that claimed McCurley’s life.

A filed affidavit shows Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Tommy Riddle responded to the accident at 8:49 a.m. the morning of the accident at a site on SH 29 just west of Interstate 35 in front of a Shell gas station.

Riddle reported there was damage to the front driver’s side of the tractor, while the mid-size car driven by McCurley sustained massive front end damage. The car was facing north while in the gas station parking lot.

He soon learned McCurley had not survived the crash, according to the affidavit.

Pauls Valley and Wynnewood firefighters worked for a reported 1 1/2 hours using a Hurst tool to extricate McCurley from the wreckage.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by a state medical examiner’s official from head and trunk internal injuries.

The trooper indicated he spoke with Adams shortly after the accident.

“Adams stated he was turning left into the Shell station to get something to drink but didn’t see McCurley traveling east on state Highway 29,” Riddle stated in the report.

The tractor then made the turn when the tragic collision occurred.

Riddle’s official conclusion was Adams was the one responsible for causing the accident.

“Adams made an unsafe turn striking McCurley’s vehicle resulting in the death of McCurley,” Riddle stated.

In the initial report on the accident Riddle listed inattention as the cause of the accident. He also concluded the truck driver was the only one wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
