Help comes for PV food pantry

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Something big looks to be at work when it comes to the help given in recent days to a Pauls Valley group that always looks to help those in need, especially when the holidays roll around.

The Pauls Valley Samaritans turned to a higher power when it looked uncertain if they could provide all the food for local residents needing a helping hand during the upcoming holiday season.

Now it appears their pleas for help have been heard as the local food pantry looks primed and ready for all the food baskets that will be needed not only for Thanksgiving next week but also the Christmas season to follow.

“We had enough money to get through Thanksgiving but we were unsure what we could do at Christmas,” said the Samaritans' Lou Hall.

Because of that uncertainty Hall recently put out a public plea for help, which was clearly answered as various groups came through with donations of money and food sure to make this year's effort a success.

“We got a great response from the community, and we're grateful for that response,” Hall said.

“I want you to continue to pray because it's working,” she said to Samaritan board members during a recent meeting.

“It's really touched my heart and I thank God. I know it was his doing.”

Any doubts about having enough for this entire holiday drive were recently turned around when the contributions starting arriving.

One was a $675 donation from clients at the Garvin County Living Center, which combined with the food and money coming from a drive held by a local bank and a variety of other individual donations of money from all over.

The way the Samaritans work is the group annually puts together whatever donations they can to provide food baskets to needy residents and families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

The first batch of baskets will soon come as food drives from local schools are expected to arrive later this week. That will be followed by volunteers giving out the food baskets in a kind of drive through set up on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 20.

All of that will be repeated for the Christmas season with baskets going out on Friday, Dec. 21.

Those interested in receiving a Christmas basket can apply at the PV Chamber of Commerce office at 112 East Paul during a five-day stretch starting Dec. 6.

During the recent meeting Samaritan board members worked to finalize the effort to get everything organized and the baskets ready for Thanksgiving.

“It has been suggested that we prepare a pamphlet to put in each basket stating we are a Christian organization and we are doing this ministry to glorify God,” Hall told fellow board members during the recent meeting.

“I don't want to tackle that right now, but I wanted you to be thinking about it.”

The board did approve the idea of including with each basket this year a copy of a Thanksgiving proclamation written by Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
