Paoli issue viewed as win-win

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Paoli school officials are hoping local residents agree a bond issue up for vote next week is a win-win kind of deal all the way around.

First of all, Superintendent Rick Worden said some much needed school improvements can get done without an increase in property taxes for landowners in the Paoli School District.

Adding to the equation is the improvements will only become a reality with this bond issue as the district — like all school districts in the state — is preparing for even more projected budget cuts since state revenues are way down, according to Worden.

“It’s just two propositions — one for building and construction and the other for student transportation,” Worden said about the school bond issue going before voters as part of an election on Tuesday, April 5.

“There is no projected increase in taxes with this bond issue. It keeps taxes at the same rate they’re at now,” he said.

“We’re not asking our people to pay any more taxes. We’re not asking for frivolous things. These are things we really need.”

In all the two five-year bond issue propositions add up to $305,000.

The largest is $230,000 that if approved by voters would be used for basically a handful of improvements.

One of those projects is a new heating and air conditioning system at Paoli’s high school to replace the current one dated around 30 years old.

Paoli’s elementary school would also get a new roof, playground equipment and fencing around the school.

There would also be upgrades in computers district-wide, Worden added.

The second part of the issue is $75,000 for the purchase of a 54-passenger school bus.

“All our needs are great,” Worden said.

“These two bond issue propositions give us a way to pay for these needed improvements because we don’t have the funding in the budget to do it.”
