Cooks, 4-H join for chili cook-off

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — It could be anywhere from tasty mild to spicy hot and maybe everything in between when cooks here in Garvin County get the chance to put together their best chili.

The best part is it helps a good cause as proceeds from a chili cook off early next month will benefit the county's 4-H program.

The event, which has no entry fee for cooks, is set to go from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 at the Garvin County Fairgrounds in Pauls Valley.

Those who are interested in sampling the tasty selections can get tickets of $5 each from 4-H members throughout the county or at the OSU Extension office in the county courthouse in PV.

Sarah Jolly of the county 4-H program is encouraging any and all cooks to join in with their best chili.

“We want all Garvin County cooks to enter in this chili cook off,” Jolly said. “There is no entry fee, and there will be prizes.”

There will be two age categories for chili cook off participants — Youth is 18 years old and under, while Adult is 19 and over.

Proceeds from the event will go to help the 4-H program in a couple of different ways.

“A portion of the money goes to benefit their local club and a portion is for the county club,” she said.

“It goes to all 4-H activities we sponsor; things like camps or teaching students leadership abilities.”

Another positive aspect of the event is it can be a true family thing, said Family and Consumer Sciences educator Carrie Kile

“With the kids we're encouraging them to check with their parents or grandparents to get them involved,” Kile said.

“They could have recipes for chili that are handed down through the generations or they can just do it together,” she said.

“This should be a family affair, so we encourage people to come together for this.”

The entry deadline for the cooks is Friday, Nov. 30.

When the cook off does roll around donations of non-perishable canned food items will also be accepted at the door to benefit area food pantries.

For more information on the event, call the Garvin County 4-H office at 405-238-6681.
