Paoli program kicks off Christmas in song

emann@pvdemocrat.com — While it doesn’t take long to get acclimated to the annual holiday rituals in Garvin County, each year can always be a first for new residents in any of its communities.

Engaged in a holiday crash course in the first year as Paoli’s elementary principal, Greg Grimmett has had a chance to get involved and learn the importance of their own special tribute to all things jolly as it returns before the break.

Normally a musical with acting as well as tunes, this year grades pre-k through 6th are instead sticking to just familiar musical numbers as it welcomes residents and parents at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17.

“The community enjoys it and the kids are excited to do it,” said Grimmett. “We’re just trying something different.”

However, though the play format won’t be there this time around, Grimmett can promise much of the same flair from the decorative backdrop on the cafeteria stage to creative costumes like angels or present box outfits for the kids.

There should be something there for everyone with songs like “Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer” as well as “Jingle Bells” and the second grade class has even used the opportunity to turn it into a learning experience with the plan to also feature sign language.

For those who can’t make the Monday evening performance, Grimmett invites people to attend the 9 a.m. dress rehearsal, which has in years past been nearly as packed with attendees.

The last day of classes before Christmas is Thursday, Dec. 20.

“I think it’s important because I get to see the kids’ smiling faces and anticipation of the season,” said Grimmett, who says it also allows him to get into one of his favorite times of the year. “We want to do fun things and still learn.
