Zane Cooper Barnes

Zane Cooper Barnes, age 15, of the Wynnewood/Pauls Valley area, a former Atoka area resident, was born on Oct. 10, 1994, to James Mark and Berlynda Kay Barnes in Durant, Okla.

Zane passed away on Nov. 20, 2009, in Pauls Valley at the age of 15 years, 1 month and 20 days.

He graduated elementary school from Harmony School. Zane was a freshman at Wynnewood High School.

He was a member of the Blackjack Baptist Church. He competed in reading on the Sequoyah and Mystery Trips. Zane was on the academic team and superintendent’s honor roll at Harmony and received a president’s award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA since third grade. He loved to be with his friends and was one of the most polite young men you ever knew. He always had a smile.

Zane is survived by his mother, Berlynda Kay Barnes Freel of Wynnewood, Okla.; father, James Mark Barnes of Atoka, Okla.; brother, Woodrow McCrae Barnes of Atoka, Okla.; uncles: Kent Freel and friend Linda Caves of Tushka, Okla., and Kevin Freel and wife Justina of Jetmore, Kan.; aunts: Janet Williams of Jetmore, Kan., and Kim Barnes Elkins and husband Chris of Coalgate, Okla.; grandparents: James and Tommie Barnes of Coalgate, Okla.; cousins: Shea Lynn Olivarez and Marcus, Tevin, and Trey Freel of Jetmore, Kan., Kyler Farris of Dodge City, Kan., Cajen Shore of Wellington, Kan., and Katie and Kylar Freel of Ponca City, Okla., Dalyon Freel of Tushka, Okla., and Makaela and Makenzie Elkins of Coalgate, Okla.; great aunts and uncles: Sally and Harold Bauer and Gaylen and Betty Searle of Hudson, Kan., Anna Vee Searle of Stafford, Kan., Karen Sue Goodman and Linda Freel of Aurora, Colo., Jimmy Ruth and Gene Pierce and Betty Stapp of Hennepin, Okla., Byron and Marlene Freel of Aurora, Colo., Bill Freel and Connie Freel and Darrell and Erma Jean Freel of Loveland, Colo., and Bev Jones and husband Bob of Hutchinson, Kan.; special friends: Dennis and Cyndi Campbell of Pauls Valley, Okla., Jaylene Duncan of Ashland, Kan., Rachel Redburn of Healy, Kan., and The Hamilton Clan of Atoka, Okla.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and many dear and loved friends.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack Merle and Carol Sue Freel; and great uncles and aunts: James Searle, Donald Searle, Lawrence Searle, Rodney Freel, Elva and Mutz Pagler, Bonnie Hart, Patti Page, Duke Freel, Buck Freel, Patricia and Bob Parkinson and Lloyd Stapp.

Services will be on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Wynnewood, Okla., and on Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Brown’s Funeral Chapel at Atoka, Okla. Interment will be at Bera Cemetery in Atoka, Okla., with Dr. James Crowson officiating and Rev. Wayne Wall assisting. Music is by Darrell Bauer.

Casketbearers are Chris Elkins, Kevin Freel, Kent Freel, Marcus Freel, Tevin “T.J.” Freel, Khini Billings, Michael “Mike” Nolen and Dillon Rose. Honorary casketbearers are Trey Freel and Dalyon Freel.

Family visitation is on Tuesday night from 6-8 p.m.

Services are under the direction of Brown’s Funeral Service in Atoka, Okla. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Zane Cooper Barnes Memorial at Brown’s Funeral Service.
