Carol Ann Stringfield Carter
Carol Ann Stringfield Carter, 88, died Friday, January 15, 2010, in Duncan, Oklahoma. She was born March 23, 1921, in Little, Oklahoma, to James and Anna Stringfield.
Carol attended school in Prairie Valley, Ada and Stillwater. She graduated with honors from Oklahoma A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in education. She also earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Oklahoma. She was a member of Chi Omega, Oklahoma Education Association, Association of Classroom Teachers, Oklahoma Reading Council, American Association of University Women and Foster Extension Homemakers.
Carol was married to Marion Creed Carter on May 3, 1947. They had four children, three daughters and a son: Lynn Kallus, Pam Johnson, Nina Johnson and Creed Carter.
Carol resided in Elmore City for 50 years. She was widowed in 1962 when her husband, Marion, died on a drilling rig east of Lindsay. She never remarried and raised four children while teaching public school.
Carol’s teaching career included jobs at Laverne, Sapulpa, Seminole County , Oklahoma City Public Schools, McCarty, Elmore City, Strother and finally retiring at Maysville Public Schools in 1984.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents. Her father, James, died on her first birthday and her mother, Anna, never remarried. Carol’s only sibling, a brother, Jim Stringfield, also preceded her in death. She adored her brother Jim throughout his life and was very proud to be his sister.
Carol was a Christian who influenced many lives through her teaching and example. Joyce and Maurice Cantwell of Elmore City were her lifelong friends. Joyce was a buddy, confidant and counselor. They enjoyed much laughter during their daily phone visits.
When Carol was unable to live alone any longer, she made her home with her youngest daughter, Nina and her husband Keith Johnson at Velma, Okla.
Surviving Carol Ann Carter are one son, Creed Carter and wife Patricia of Elk City, Okla.; three daughters: Nina and husband Keith Johnson of Velma, Okla., Pam and husband Doug Johnson of Tallahassee, Fla., and Lynn and husband Ken Kallus of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren: Saxon Carter of Weatherford, Okla., Stacey Barker and husband Jeff of Elk City, Okla., and Jason Johnson and wife Cathy of Mustang, Okla.; and three great-grandchildren: Cy Barker of Elk City, Okla., Cody Johnson of Prattville, Ala., and Savannah Johnson of Mustang, Okla.
Funeral services will be held at the Velma Baptist Church, Velma, Okla., at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Carol will be buried beside her husband, Marion, in Little Cemetery at Little, Okla.
