Cakes sweeten up Sesquicentennial

At the end of September the city of Pauls Valley will be recognizing a milestone in their history — the sesquicentennial — 150 years as an Oklahoma settlement.

A variety of festive events are being planned to commemorate the momentous occasion including a gigantic birthday party, complete with plenty of sweet dessert to go around.

“There will be a special ceremony on Saturday, September 29, at the Santa Fe Depot. We’ll have a giant four-tiered 150th birthday cake made out of 300 cupcakes, in conjunction with Pauls Valley’s Sesquicentennial. The cake will be showcased during the event and we’re asking local groups to become part of the celebration,” explained Miki Tucker, owner of Fleur Cakes and Bakes in Pauls Valley and one of the bakers who will be making cakes for the ceremony.

“Families, churches, businesses and civic organizations are being invited to have their own personal birthday cake surrounding the large one. Sheet cakes with edible images of family crests, civic group or business logos, or just special birthday messages to Pauls Valley, are being made to order,” Tucker said.

“Amy Richey, of How Sweet it Is, and I will be doing the baking and the iced sheet cakes are available in white or chocolate at a cost of $27 each. Cakes will be quarter-sheet size and orders can be made through the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce by calling 405-238-6491.”

To create the colored edible images for the sheet cakes, Tucker said all orders must to be accompanied by a photo, logo design or any other image with which the group would like to be associated.

The deadline to order the special Sesquicentennial cakes is Friday, Sept. 14.
