A lasting impression

Special coins to commemorate Sesquicentennial

In 1957, Pauls Valley released a special commemorative coin in celebration of the city’s 100th anniversary.

Numerous area residents purchased one of the metal momentos so they could they gaze upon it years afterward and recall the historic celebration in which they had taken part.

Another special event in the city’s history is set to take place at the end of September and local residents will have a chance to again capture that rare moment in time as well with the purchase of yet another commemorative coin, soon to be released.

“Pauls Valley will be celebrating its 150th birthday September 28th through the 30th with activities in the historic downtown area, in Wacker Park and at the airport,” explained Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce Director Della Wilson.

“To help remember this very special moment in the city’s history, we are offering a beautiful commemorative sesquicentennial coin to the public, available in two different finishes,” Wilson said.

“It will be slightly larger than a half-dollar in size and it will come in a shiny brass finish as well as an antique nickel finish. It will be a nice collectible coin of very high quality and the public can purchase one at a cost of five dollars each.”

Each coin will bear two different images — one on the front (obverse), and one on the back (reverse).

And according to coin designer, Kevin Stark, each image portrays a familiar symbol of Pauls Valley’s rich past.

“On the front of the coin there is an image of Smith Paul, who first settled here and after whom the city got its name. Doug Strickland and I designed the coin and worked off of a classic photo of Smith Paul that almost everyone around here knows,” Stark said.

“On the other side is an image of the clock tower that stands at the Santa Fe Depot. We picked it because it has the name ‘Pauls Valley’ on it and because we wanted to show something that’s devoted to the depot.

“After all, the depot is something historical that’s been around here a long time. The town was built around the railroad track and the depot has been here since the town’s early years.”

The public can purchase as many of the commemorative coins as they wish from a special dispensing machine, which will be set up at three different locations over a 14-week period.

Coin dispensing outlets include Pauls Valley National Bank from Sept. 24 through Oct. 31, First United Bank and Trust from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30, and the Wal-Mart Supercenter from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31.

Coins are also available on an early-order basis through the Chamber of Commerce office.

Early orders must be submitted by Friday, Sept. 14 and each one will be encased in a free holder to help protect the finish of the coin.

Orders may be placed by calling the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce office at 405-238-6491 or by submitting the order form found on page 3A of this issue of the Daily Democrat.
