Massive mule team to arrive in PV

Always known to do things up in a big way, the Pauls Valley Kiwanis Club has decided to help celebrate the upcoming Pauls Valley Sesquicentennial by hosting “A Touch of Ear,” the largest matching blonde sorrel draft mule hitch in the United States.

Weighing in at over 2,000 pounds each, the gigantic mules that make up the massive team are much larger that average mules, due to their unique pedigree.

“Most mules are crossed with a quarterhorse and a burro or jackass and they come out about 14-to-15 hands tall. A hand is about 4-to-5 inches wide.

“But the mules on this team are crossed between a Blonde Belgian mare and a Mammoth Jack and the result is they turn out about 19 hands tall and are extremely heavy. They’re absolutely huge!” explained Pauls Valley Kiwanis Club President, Angela Williams.

“It takes at least six people traveling in two semis to haul and maintain the hitch. The hitch and equipment weighs more than eight tons.”

The “Touch Of Ear” hitch will be in Pauls Valley north of the ball fields in Wacker Park from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sept. 29. They will perform two “parade-type” performances that day and the draft mules and all there associated equipment will be available for review by the public.

When not hitched up to their gargantuan harnesses, the mules will be on display in a makeshift corral at the park and, despite their intimidating stature, Williams assured the public that the equestrian behemoths are “gentle and docile as can be.”

All hitch personnel are audience-oriented so everyone is invited to bring their families and cameras along to get a close-up look at these truly magnificent animals. There will also be free posters of the team available as well as “Touch Of Ear” hitch T-shirts for sale.

If a hunger pain strikes you or you need something to wet your whistle, the Pauls Valley Kiwanis Club have promised to have their famous traveling concession wagon and cook trailer set up on the premises throughout the day, with plenty of delicious food and cold drinks on hand.
