Savages face Wayne in home opener

The first game jitters are behind new head coach Brad O’Steen and his Wynnewood Savages. O’Steen is veteran of the game and jitters are as prevalent as they were for a mixture of experienced and inexperienced players who had to play a top 5 team in Class 2A, Davis.

Even though the Savages lost their opener, it was good experience for this young team - but now the real season begins. The Savages now begin district play with a big home game against the Wayne Bulldogs.

“It’s a district game,” O’Steen said. “It’s very important.

“We expect them to play lights out and we expect a good football game.”

Wayne lost it’s opener to Elmore City-Pernell so both teams will be looking to get off on a good foot in district play.

Both teams will spread the field and the game could be a high scoring affair.

“It depends on what kind of weather we are having,” O’Steen said. “We both like to throw the ball a little.”

Josh Barrett leads the multiple attack offense for the Bulldogs. Barrett had over 250 combined yards including 150 on the ground.

“Barrett does a great job running the offense,” O’Steen said. “He runs and throws the ball equally well. He has a good receiver, Worley, to throw to and a good tailback.”

With the dual threat action of Barrett and the skill guys around him, the Savages have to be ready for anything.

“We have to have 11 guys on the same page,” O’Steen said.

Freshman Jace Brown started the season under center for the Savages and will get the nod again this week despite the return of veteran Perry.

Perry will more than likely see action Friday night to give the Savages a different look and some experience under center in a big district game.

Both teams would like to be 1-0 in district play and Wynnewood knows it will have to play well to get that win.

“We have to take care of the football,” O’Steen said. “We need to control the line of scrimmage and create turnovers. We have to do a better job of creating field position for us with our special teams.”

Wynnewood and Wayne will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Savage Stadium.
