PV needs a win for home playoff game

marie@pvdemocrat.com — The Pauls Valley Panthers have already wrapped up a spot in the Class 3A playoffs but where they are headed will all be determined Friday night as they travel to Madill to face the Wildcats.

On the line is a home playoff game or a road playoff game. Despite losing last week, the Panthers still have an opportunity to claim the district title, but they have to take care of business at Madill and then see where the chips fall or in this case where they will land.

A win by 12 points or more will assure them on a playoff game at Thompson Field. Anything less and they will be third or even fourth depending on how the Lone Grove/Plainview game ends.

The task is not an easy one for the Panthers. Madill is undefeated in district play and have an unbelievable quarterback in Paten Bond. If it seems like there has been a Bond under center for several years there has been as Paten stepped in for big brother Spencer, who graduated several years back.

Paten has had a huge year throwing the football.  He is among the leaders in Class 3A in total yards with his ability to run and pass the ball.

Paten had a career day against Plainview earlier this year. He rushed for 238 yards and 5 touchdowns and had 277 yards passing with a touchdown. That’s 515 yards and six touchdowns and also had a key interception late in the game to seal a 59-45 win over the Indians.

Purcell’s defense was able to hold Bond earlier this year. The senior did have a last minute heroic pass that gave Madill a come from behind win. Madill had 299 yards in total offense against the Dragons, 170 of that coming on the arm of Bond.

Madill has given up some yardage this season to opposing team’s defenses. With the exception of Dickson and Atoka, the Wildcats have been tested each week in district games. They have a 14-point win over Plainview, a two-point win over Purcell, and 11-point win over Lone Grove and a 7-point win over Sulphur.

Pauls Valley was able to move the ball last week through the air but couldn’t establish a running game against the quicker Plainview squad. The Panthers will need to establish their running game this week to run time off the clock and keep Bond and his explosiveness in the Madill secondary.
