With one of their leading scorers on the bench with foul trouble, the Elmore City-Pernell Badgers struggled down the stretch against rival Stratford falling 63-58 on the Bulldogs home court.
Elmore’s Shane Collins spent most of the game on bench and picking up three quick fouls in the first quarter and then two more in the third ending his game early. He came into the game averaging double figures in both points and rebounds but finished with only five minutes of action and five fouls to go along with his three points.
Quinton Stueart picked up the scoring slack for the Badgers scoring a game high 29 points. Stratford countered with Randy Brown who had 28 points in the game.
Stratford got out to a quick start behind Brown who had 12 points in the quarter all from behind the three-point arc. Stueart brought the Badgers back as he had his way in the lane scoring 12 points to give the Badgers an 18-17 lead.
The Bulldogs went on a run in the second quarter behind 8-points from Eli Savage to grab a four-point leading the game 32-28.
Brown came to life again in the third quarter with 10 points including a three pointer near the end of the quarter that gave Stratford a nine-point lead. Stratford had the ball again at the end of the quarter looking for a final shot. The shot went up but missed and Stueart came down with the rebound. With time running out Stueart went the length of the court and hit a layup at the buzzer and was fouled. He hit the free throw to cut the lead to 48-42 heading into the final eight minutes. Stueart finished the quarter with 11 points.
Elmore closed the gap all the way down in the final quarter and even had a lead. But Brown’s three pointer and then free throws lifted the Bulldogs to a five point win.
Elmore will play Saturday evening against the winner of Friday’s Healdton vs. Fox for the district championship. Stratford will host Community Christian before tackling a very tough district that includes highly rated Wewoka.
