Cali Nelson scored 12 of her game high 18 points in the third quarter to lead the Elmore City-Pernell Lady Badgers to a 58-51 win over Stratford on the Lady Bulldogs home court Tuesday.
Nelson helped lead the Lady Badgers to a 15-point lead in the quarter but Stratford made a strong push of the final 11 minutes to make the game interesting. Stratford was able to cut the lead to three at one point in the fourth quarter behind their pressure defense. Caylee Fulp, DeAmber Barrett and Cheyenne Weast each had five points in the run that cut the lead to one possession.
The difference came down to free throw shooting. Coming into the fourth quarter Elmore-Pernell was 1-of-9 from the line while Stratford was 8-of 22. In the fourth, Stratford hit only 1-of-8 while ECP hit 6-of-12 including 3-of-4 by Maci Lewis late that gave the Lady Badgers the cushion they needed for the win.
The game was plagued with fouls as the two teams combined for 47 fouls and the two went to the free throw line 51 times.
The game was back-and-forth early with the two teams exchanging blows before settling in at an 11-11 tie at the end of the quarter. Alexis Walck came to life in the second quarter with 6 points for the Lady Badgers as they opened up a slight lead. Stratford stayed within striking distance despite only going 5-of-14 from the line. Elmore only hit 1-of-7 from the charity stripe but had a 28-24 halftime lead.
Nelson came to life in the third quarter for ECP scoring 12 points as the Badgers opened up a 15-point lead in the game. Lacey Hatter got the Lady Bulldogs started with six points in the quarter as Stratford cut the lead back to 13 to start the final quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs continued their comeback in the fourth quarter. Fulp and Barrett got the fourth quarter started for Stratford with back-to-back baskets. Stratford cut the lead down to three at one-point in the quarter and had possession of the ball a couple of times with a chance to tie the game.
The final six points of the game for ECP came from the free throw including 3-of-4 from Maci Lewis that helped the Lady Badgers to the win.
Elmore will play Saturday evening against the winner of Friday’s Healdton vs. Fox for the district championship. Stratford will host Community Christian before tackling a very tough district.
