PV lets one slip away
The Pauls Valley Lady Panthers missed a golden opportunity Friday night to get into the win column. They had their chances against the Marietta Lady Indians but let the game slip away late losing a 31-30 battle.
The game was tight all night with Marietta holding the largest lead of the night at six points in the second quarter. There were nine lead changes and the game was tied on two different occasions including at 21.
Tysia Manual kept the Lady Indians in the game coming up with some crucial baskets in the game. Her 10 points in the fourth quarter that included two free throws with less than 10 seconds to go lifted Marietta to the win.
Haylee Graham tried to keep pace with Manual scoring 11 points including the final six of the game for the Lady Panthers.
Pauls Valley struggled early to find the bottom of the net. After Graham gave PV a 2-1 lead, the Lady Panthers went almost six minutes before scoring again.
Freshman Mikayla Peters came off the bench to score three points and cut the Marietta lead to 8-5.
Marietta built their lead up to 12-6 in the middle of the second quarter before PV would score four straight at the end of the first half to cut the lead to 12-10.
Micaela McCurley’s three-point basket to start the second half gave the Lady Panthers their first lead since the seven minute mark of the first quarter.
The Lady Panthers had a chance to extend their lead late in the third quarter but missed three shots in from less than five feet in the closing seconds of the quarter.
Graham and Allison Hebert joined McCurley with three point baskets in the quarter as the Lady Panthers maintained their one-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Manual hit a pair of free throws for Marietta to start the fourth quarter but Peters responded for Pauls Valley with a rebound and a put back that gave them their final lead of the game at 21-20.
Manual tied the game at 21 and later gave Marietta the lead for good with a short jumper.
Pauls Valley stayed close but they just couldn’t fight all the way back.
Graham gave Pauls Valley their biggest hope when she hit a three pointer that cut the lead to two in the final 15 seconds.
PV fouled and Manual, who had hit 6-of-10 free throws before hand, stepped to the line and nailed both of them to put the game away.
Graham hit a three pointer at the buzzer that cut the final margin to one.
PV will look for win No. 1 at Lone Grove Tuesday.
