5-minute lull dooms Panthers

A five-minute lull to start the second half doomed the Pauls Valley Panthers as Lone Grove hit 10 straight to open up a 13-point lead and they held on late for a 55-45 win.

Lone Grove had a 13-2 run to start the third quarter and turned a three-point game into a double digit lead for the Longhorns. That would be their largest lead of the game but it would be enough to lift them to their second straight win of the year.

Lone Grove jumped out early in the game taking an 11-4 lead. Pauls Valley would score the final six points of the quarter to cut the lead to one. The game would go back-and-forth in the second quarter with Caleb Livingston giving Pauls Valley their first and only lead of the game, 20-18, with a three pointer.

A four-point play by Hayden Musgrove turned the game around as Lone Grove scored a 6-1 run late for a 24-21 lead at the break.

That run would continue on in the second half as Lone Grove extended the run to 19-3. Musgrove would finish with 12 points in the run.

Spencer Ward would end a five-minute drought at the start of the second half with a basket and Livingston would follow that up with a traditional three-point play at the end of the third quarter as PV cut the lead to 11.

Pauls Valley chipped away at the lead as Tyler Harding found his range after struggling in quarters two and three. The Panthers would get the lead down to seven and then to six at the five-point mark of the quarter.

That would be as close as PV would get despite 12 points from Harding. Lone Grove would hit their free throws down the stretch to keep Pauls Valley from getting all the way back.

Pauls Valley will look to get back in the win column at Sulphur Friday.
